Breaking Down NHL Trades: Winners and Losers

Updated: Oct 5, 2025

The NHL preseason wasn’t just about warmup games — it brought some big moves that could shake up the season before it even starts. From veteran trades to fresh starts for young players, a few teams made bold statements while others might have taken on more than they bargained for. Here’s a look at some of the biggest recent deals and how they stack up.

Winner: Philadelphia Flyers — Going All In on Young Talent

The Flyers made headlines by trading for Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks, sending Ryan Poehling and a couple of draft picks the other way. It’s a gutsy move, but it makes sense. Zegras is flashy, confident, and the kind of creative playmaker Philly’s been missing. If he clicks with their young core, this could be the trade that pushes their rebuild into real progress. For the Ducks, though, it feels like they gave up on him too early.

Winner: Pittsburgh Penguins — Sneaky Smart Goalie Move

The Penguins quietly picked up Arturs Silovs from Vancouver in exchange for Chase Stillman and a mid-round draft pick. It’s not the kind of deal that grabs headlines, but it could pay off. Silovs showed real promise in the AHL and looks ready to take on NHL minutes. Pittsburgh gets younger in goal — something they’ve needed for a while — and gives themselves insurance behind Tristan Jarry. Vancouver gets short-term flexibility, but if Silovs pans out, this one could sting.

Loser: San Jose Sharks — Taking on Risky Contracts

San Jose’s trade for Ryan Ellis was more about money than hockey. The Sharks added Ellis and a late pick from Philadelphia, sending back Carl Grundström and a young defenseman. The issue? Ellis hasn’t played regularly in years, and it’s unclear if he’ll even return to the ice. Sure, the Sharks get a future draft asset and reach the salary floor, but it’s another example of a team taking on a heavy contract with little on-ice return.
